Stick with seasoned Red Fir (Douglas Fir) or Western Larch. Realistically, the only way it will still be hot in the tent when you wake up is if you go to bed 3hrs before you plan on waking up or have a giant wood stove.

Steel is the preferred material, especially for large and heavy canvas tents. Every so often, you may stumble across a tent with a stove jack that has poles made from aluminum or fiberglass, but these are more of the exception. They just aren't as suitable for the endurance work necessary for tents like these.

Plywood and chipboard are materials often used in construction or furniture creation. However, they are not suitable to be used as fuel in your wood-burning stove. They are typically glued together using synthetic resins, which can release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere when burned.

Softwoods and resinous (oily) woods may burn inefficiently. For this reason, pine, eucalyptus, birch, aspen, and a few other species do not make the best logs for a wood burning stove.

Using a Woodburning Stove in Your Tent

Using a stove in your tent is known as 'Hot Tenting'; believe me, a good stove can warm your tent. However, you can't put a stove in just any tent. The tent will typically need to be canvas or polycotton and have an opening for the hot flue pipe (the 'chimney').

This rule means that your chimney's shortest side needs to be at least 3 feet above the roof penetration, and its top has to be 2 feet higher than any part of the building that's within 10 feet.

Because air pressure is lower at higher altitudes, and a taller column of rising air pulls harder on the air below it, increasing the height of a chimney generally strengthens draft.
